Our journey
Through each milestone, our journey at Ingersoll Rand Material Handling reflects a rich tapestry of innovation, adaptation, and dedication to safety and excellence, shaping the future of the material handling industry. Let us explore together the achievements that have defined who we are and what we stand for.
The Birth of Innovation
In the heart of the industrial revolution, a visionary named Simon Ingersoll founded the Ingersoll Rock Drill Company. His steam-powered percussion rock drill was not just a tool; it was a game-changer that laid the groundwork for a legacy of innovation.
Strengthening Through Merger
As the company grew, so did its ambitions. In 1888, the Ingersoll Rock Drill Company merged with the Sergeant Drill Company, forming the Ingersoll Sergeant Drill Company.
This strategic alliance empowered the team to tackle complex projects, such as the challenging task of clearing New York's Hell Gate channel, showcasing their expertise in overcoming complex challenges.
Expanding Horizons
The dawn of the 20th century brought new possibilities. A pivotal partnership with Rand Drill Company led to the birth of Ingersoll Rand. This collaboration marked a defining moment, heralding an era of engineering excellence that would shape the future of the industry.
Beebe Bros., Inc. was Founded
Meanwhile, across the country in Seattle, WA, R.H. Beebe saw an opportunity in the growing demand for hand winches. In 1924, he founded Beebe Bros., Inc. to produce 5-ton capacity winches, initially crafted for his own use. Little did he know, this venture would thrive and capture the attention of many.
Entering the Winch Market
Just two years later, Ingersoll Rand made its own mark in the winch market with the introduction of the “Classic” winch line. This was a significant step in diversifying their offerings, setting the stage for future innovations.
Product Line Expansion
As the years went by, Beebe Bros. responded to market needs by expanding its product line to include 30-ton capacity hand winches in 1938. This growth reflected the company’s commitment to meeting the evolving demands of their customers.
Supporting the War Effort
During World War II, Beebe's winches took on a new role, providing critical support for the war effort. Over 1,000 water landing craft vehicles were equipped with 2-ton winches for ramp handling, demonstrating the company's resilience and adaptability in challenging times.
Establishment of Samiia
In the aftermath of the war, a new player entered the scene. Samiia was founded in France in 1947, specializing in hoists for mining applications. This addition to the industry further diversified the landscape of material handling.
Introduction of Air Hoists
Around the same time, Ingersoll Rand recognized the potential of air technology. By introducing a line of air hoists for industrial applications, they expanded their product range and solidified their position as industry leaders.
Innovation in Hoisting Technology
In 1955, ARO Equipment Corporation emerged with the first rotary vane hoist. This innovation not only enhanced material handling solutions but also illustrated the ongoing quest for excellence within the industry.
Expansion of Beebe Product Line
As the years passed by, Beebe Bros. continued to innovate, introducing ratchet hoists in 1959. This expansion demonstrated their commitment to providing diverse and effective solutions for their customers.
Focus on Ergonomics
Recognizing the importance of ergonomic design, Zimmerman International was founded in 1960. Their mission was to create equipment that aids in ergonomic handling operations, setting new standards for safety and efficiency.
Achieving Sales Milestone
By 1962, Beebe Bros. celebrated a significant milestone, reaching $1 million in sales. This achievement underscored their growth and solidified their reputation in the industry.
Commitment to Safety
The 1970s marked a critical shift in focus towards safety. Ingersoll Rand invented and trademarked the Manrider® Winch, enhancing safety protocols for worker elevation in environments such as oil and gas operations, demonstrating a deep commitment to worker welfare.
Acquisition of Beebe Bros., Inc.
In 1987, the story took an exciting turn when Ingersoll Rand acquired Beebe Bros., integrating their expertise into the newly established Material Handling Division. This acquisition strengthened Ingersoll Rand's market presence and expanded their capabilities.
Strategic Acquisitions
The momentum continued in 1990 with the acquisition of Samiia and ARO Equipment Corporation. These strategic moves not only broadened their manufacturing base but also expanded their geographic reach, allowing them to serve an even wider array of industries.
Further Expansion
Ingersoll Rand’s journey of growth continued with the acquisition of Zimmerman International Corp. in 1996, further solidifying their leadership in the material handling sector.
Transforming Offshore Operations
The year 2010 marked a significant operational shift, with the production of low-capacity hoists moving from Southern Pines, NC, to a new facility in Kent, WA. This consolidation streamlined operations and brought winch and hoist production to a centralized location.
That same year, Ingersoll Rand unveiled the Subsea Hydraulic Chain hoist, revolutionizing offshore operations and showcasing their innovative capabilities in handling equipment beneath the ocean's surface.
Enhancing Operational Efficiency
As industries continued to evolve, Ingersoll Rand responded by launching advanced material handling controls in 2013, significantly improving efficiency and safety across various sectors.
A New Era Begins
Finally, in 2020, Ingersoll Rand Material Handling merged with Gardner Denver, a leader in compressors, blowers, and vacuum pumps. This pivotal partnership opened a new chapter of growth and innovation, reinforcing their joint unwavering commitment to excellence.
